Expensive compared to most Thai places, decent for Ann Arbor prices. We normally have water, split and appetizer and two entrees for $40ish
Simply the best Thai food I have ever had.
Lovely little spot with delicious food. I often get take out, but sitting in the cozy restaurant is always a nice treat.
I think in Ann Arbor there are better places. Place needs to be remodeled.
Went 3 times so far, trying something different each time. Enjoying everything so far. The red curry vegetarian option with tofu is my favorite so far. (Sound/spelling is similar to Choo Chee on the menu)
If you want the best Thai food in Ann Arbor, this is the place. The Pad Thai is delicious, authentic, and spicy. Every dish I’ve had over the years has been great. Most of its bad reviews here are due to the service. I personally care much more about a restaurant’s food than its service. And given the quality of Old Siam’s dishes, I think you should too.
This is BY FAR the best Thai restaurant in Ann Arbor. The owners are very friendly. It is a very casual setting but the food is great. Cant believe to read of others giving it 1 or 2 stars. 5+ STARS. Been going here for years. Have eaten in the restaurant and done take-out as well. Great place!
One of my favorites! The staff is all very friendly and the food is incredible. They value their customers (they even remember my order!). The best Thai food in Ann Arbor–– trust me!
I was recommended to try this restaurant and so I ordered their favorite dish for carry out. I was hesitant by reading some reviews but I was still optimistic... so I ordered #64. Spicy shrimp... let me tell you- it wasn’t really spicy but was heavy on the seasoning. The portion size was incredibly small- maybe 6-8 pieces of medium shrimp with chili peppers and tomatoes. You get a side of rice to go with it and I was blindsided when the bill was $17. Kidding right? Was definitely disappointed, wouldn’t recommend going here. Reason why it’s not 1 star is because the woman who gave me my order seemed was very nice.
This is our go-to West Side Thai restaurant... Probably eat here at least once a week and we're never disappointed. The curries especially are better than most other places in town.
Our favorite Thai restaurant. We especially love the Shrimp in sweet chili paste, the chicken with sweet holy basil, and the fried shrimp appetizer. We have been regulars since 1982.
Food is best. Service is worst. The owner is just the most rude guy ever. Never smiles allways cranky and in a bad mood. I keep going back for the good food though
This place has gotten worse and worse. They now have a salad with iceberg lettuce and potato chips. The Tom Ka Gai soup was lukewarm, tasted like it had just been defrosted and salty but not well spiced. My main dish, veggie rice noodle rad na, was overcooked and pretty tasteless. I could tell they sprinkled some cayenne on top to make it "medium" spiced. The tuna dish ordered by my husband used canned tuna (to their credit, they warned him in advance); the only thing Thai about it seemed to be the spicing. We also waited for 10 min, although there were open tables. They appear understaffed in both the dining area and kitchen. The restaurant itself is nice inside; too bad it is deteriorating.
This is one of the best Thai restaurants in town. But their hours are sometimes weird.
Fantastic authentic Thai cuisine!
I really want to like this place because of my first experience, but the gentleman who has seated us has been very rude to my family. The food served has obviously contained bad (like rotten) scallops twice now and both times he took the food with little surprise. I believe they intentionally try to use old food because their business is failing. When asked about allergies they claim to have only one cook pan and suggested we leave if peanuts are a problem... Really? Something is really wrong here and it has a lot to do with negativity and bad business management. Sad to have the promise of a good restaurant so close and have it be such a disaster. Never returning.
Some of the best Thai food in the area. Atmosphere is a little crowded and staff is attentive while maybe a little less than friendly. Wide variety of food to choose from and all very delicious. Highly recommend if you enjoy good Thai.
Fried shrimp was not fully fried. I unbelievably bit into wet batter. For a moment I thought it was some type of a cream sauce inside. The fried rice was good. They use small grain white rice. The waiter was unfriendly and unhelpful. He was almost unapproachable. And he was apparently suffering from allergies or some type of sinus situation because he was constantly snorting mucus which is a very unpleasant sound when you're trying to eat.
One of the worst meals (out of 100+ restaurants) I've had in Ann Arbor. Summed up in two words: aggressively bland. The tofu was super dry and overcooked, and tasted like eating a spoonful of raw flour. My dish was served in 100% grease instead of sauce, and even with that, it was still flavorless. I'm fairly sure the rice was minute rice, or at least, something was wrong with it. The pad thai was just weird. Nothing was actively revolting, it was just so underwhelming. On the plus side, the service was very friendly and efficient. But I definitely won't be going back.
Pad Thai from The Old Siam is the perfect studying food. I love to call in a takeout order and have the container sitting by my side while I work. Love this place!
Having been in different Thai restaurants, but these Thai foods are beyond excellent and well-making. These are in a Tup Tim order, which is for two people. It is all combined well. Nice staff, cozy place, and great location! Totally satisfied.
The food at this restaurant is extremely tasty. They also have very good Thai iced tea. There is a consistent level of customers, and they're not often full. Expect to pay 12-20$ for lunch. The hours are a bit limited. Note that they are also closed Sunday and Monday. The decorations are beautiful, and it's a great layout. The tables up front are very bright, while the tables in the back are very cozy and have much dimmer lighting. The walls haven't been repainted for a long time, so that could use some touch ups.
Very good. Got carry-out and will definitely make it a regular.
They are open for lunch and dinner - not open Mondays - Great place, been here forever. They often close for family vacations in the summer or around New Year, always call ahead. It is a little pricey, but most meals are really two meals - great left overs - they really do Tofu well - #56 is a family favorite
The food was disappointing. I now understand why the previous reviews complained of burnt greasy noodles. That is exactly what i got. The egg in the pad thai was so overcooked that it was burned and charred and all you could taste throughout the dish was that charred burned taste. The noodles were sort of burned and very oily . To top it off this interpretation of pad thai is very bland tasting and dry with no sauce or liquid so you have to douse it in soy sauce making it overly salty to cover up the burned parts. VERY disappointing to someone experienced in various pad thai dishes. The service was decent but I will not be returning. I can make my own pad thai that is 1000x better than this burned piled of greasy noodles.
Great Thai food!
Don't get me wrong... the food is fantastic. They do have interesting takes on things... I like most of it though. My only real complaint is the host is not always the best to customers... I'm not saying they're mean or anything but they don't exactly work on customer first approach. For instance we'd show up 15min before they close between lunch and dinner and they refused to serve us since they're not sure we can be out by closing. I'm not saying they should... but places that really care about customer loyalty doesn't do that.
If I could eat here everyday I would be a happy camper!!!😋⛺️
I have been eating here since 1998, best Thai food!
Great Thai food and service.
The food took 35 minutes to come out and when it did mine was cold but my wife’s was fine. The food didn’t really have much flavor and we were not impressed. We will not be back!
The flavors of our food were very good! We enjoyed it all very much. The pad Thai was more sprouts and chicken than noodle. The curry was quite hot, and the spring rolls were nice and crispy.
Server is rude.
We came here as a large group (maybe a dozen) for lunch a couple of weeks ago, and I was very excited; anything Thai is a win in my book. So I was sad to be underwhelmed by The Old Siam. I ended up getting a lunch combo, and felt that the actual meat of the meal (in this case, well, actual meat) was woefully skimpy. And then the stuff that's cheaper for them--like starches--was given in plenty. So it just felt kind of cheap. The taste was eh. Nothing to write home about. The Thai food in Ann Arbor is generally okay, which is to say, it's still not great... but places like Siam Square and Marnee Thai do a much better job. More food, bolder flavor, nicer ambiance.
The. Best. Try the Pad Thai. It's unlike anywhere else I've tried. Other places might be good, but this dish is only done this way here, in my experience. All sauces are house made by the owner - I think that's what makes the dishes so special. Siam roll appetizers are another must. You want to try this place. It's ticked away in a shopping plaza. Follow your nose. It's not even fair what they do with smell by way of advertising!
This compares favorably to my favorite Thai restaurants in Chicago (OK, it's not Arun's level). My wife, who's worked in Thailand, enjoyed it as well. Underrated at it's current level of 3.4 stars.
I have dined there a few times and it has always been passable but not great. For the price it is rather poor. The green Curry this time was bland and the chicken was tough and dry. I asked for a small amount of rice to top off what was left over and the would only sell me another full order.I will never return here again. There are much better options for Thai in Ann Arbor, for a better price, and not as willing to insult me over 50 cents worth of rice.
Super pad Thai was anything but super. Also ordered old Siam fried rice. Both dishes tasted exactly the same – greasy and as if they were cooked in burned pans or a dirty flat top. The Tom Young Goon soup was ok (too much fish sauce). Spring rolls were not filled properly which created pockets that retained the frying oil. Got sick. Definitely won't be back. Siam Square on washtenaw is way better... Marnee Thai is great but expensive.
It was just ok. No chop sticks, order was a bit wrong and poorly labled. Server was kind of friendly but mostly rushed. I may go again and eat in for the experience as I ordered out.
We love Thai food and go to a number of places in metro Detroit. We ordered two dishes. One was a coconut curry dish which was spicy but lacked flavor and was 1/2 the portion at a typical Thai restaurant. The next was pad Thai chicken which was 1/3 of a portion we would get elsewhere. It also had zero flavor or spice and was very greasy.
One of the best restaurants in Ann Arbor! My family has been coming here for years!
Nice selection of Thai dishes and a quiet place. Addictive "Old Siam Fried Rice"!
Quick food delivery service.
Excellent Phad Thai. Good portions. Great lunch specials under $10.00. My meal (Phad Thai), was $11.00 with just water, but it was cooked well, tasted great and was a large plate. Minor drawback for those who care, fountain soda is $2.00 and the menu says no refills. Not a huge issue, but putting that out there. Service was prompt, friendly, and helpful. We were served very quickly. Food was hot and vegetables seemed fresh. Place was really clean. Will absolutely go back here, as this was my first time. All 3 others who were with me for lunch said they loved their meals. Give this place a look.
Good food but we waited over 45 minutes with no explanation or apology. And this is with two Thai people seated at our table who know the owner and his wife! Such poor service without any explanation is really inexcusable at any restaurant.
We have been going here for 10+ years and have always had great experiences. The food is always nourishing, fulfilling, and phenomenally made, and the owners are always happy to see us. They go to Thailand every year (which also allows their dishes to be kept up-to-date), and whenever I go to another Thai place, it's not the same as here. Great service, great owners, and amazing food.
Delicious food with great flavors! The family that runs the place is so kind and makes dining there a delight everytime. Highly recommend!
I visit this Thai restaurant once a month with my daughter and have been going for years.. we love it. Excellent Thai food.
Food was the best I ever tasted
Wonderful find tucked into strip mall. Award winning authentic Thai cuisine. Affordable. Peaceful atmosphere with exceptional service.
